ZF Lenksysteme will close their Gwent plant

Gwent/United Kingdom. ZF Lenksysteme GmbH regretfully announce their decision to proceed with the closure of their plant producing steering columns on the Rassau Industrial Estate in Blaenau Gwent with the loss of 55 jobs.

The international economic crisis and the problems affecting the automotive industry have seriously impacted our business. The recent crisis comes on top of a gradual reduction of the activity due to a lack of new contracts and financial losses in the Rassau plant stretching back several years.

Since opening discussions in early December the company has been reviewing options with their workforce representatives but has reached the conclusion that continuing operations in the Rassau plant is no longer viable. Therefore it is with regret that the company announces that it will commence working towards an orderly closure of operations during 2010, with the loss of 55 jobs.

The exact timing will be subject to review with our workforce, customers and suppliers but it is not anticipated that significant headcount reduction will take place before Q4 2010.

Discussions with the workforce representatives regarding the timing and terms of the closure will be opened immediately. The company thanks the employees for their dedication and commitment over the years and would like to state that the closure decision is no reflection on their performance.
ZF Lenksysteme GmbH, a 50:50 joint venture of Robert Bosch GmbH and ZF Friedrichshafen AG, is a specialist and technology leader in the field of steering systems and has 10,500 employees at 17 sites in 10 countries. The Group generated sales of over 2.6 billion euros in 2008.
